Advances in Dental Implants

Over the past few years if someone needed dental implants, there was a minimal wait time of at least 3-6 months before any artificial tooth could be attached or used with the implant. During this time the individual getting the implant either needed to go without a tooth in that spot or had to have a removable prosthesis that came in and out of the mouth.

Immediate Function Of Dental Implants

When you hear experts talking about the various features of dental implants, you may have heard the term “Immediate function” mentioned before. This means that the artificial teeth can be attached in as little as 48 hours, giving the patient the ability to eat drink, and speak normally shortly after the implants. You may recognize this concept used under the trade names that include “teeth in a day,” or “teeth in an hour.”  These services allow people to get back to their normal lives and routines shortly after the procedure and they are able to put their new teeth to work right away.

For full implant generation there is a 3-6 month waiting period which allows for the osseointengration process to be carried out. Osseointegration is the process that causes implants and natural bone to fuse together to become one. This is the process used in surgical implants such as pins and rods and plates and also includes dental implant structures to help them bond to the bones and strengthen the affected area. It was one thought that the implants had to be unused for the 3-6 months until the osseointegration process was fully carried out.  Now we know that in some cases, as long as an implant is kept from moving and shifting in the implant area, it can be used before full osseointegration is complete. Care just needs to be taken to protect the implant from damage in the mean time.

Computer-Guided Dental Implant Surgery

Computer-guided surgery that has been designed for dental implants are involved with the construction of implants and guides that are developed by the prosthodontist in conjunction with the surgeon. By getting a CT image and by studying the scan results, the surgeon and prosthodontist are able to discuss the best plan for the patient.  They can see how much bone mass there is to work with in the jaw, how crowded or spaced out the teeth are, where the missing or damaged teeth are, and how exactly the implants need to be designed in order to provide the best fit. Once this has been accomplished the most favorable implant positions are determined and selected. The goal then becomes to reproduce this virtual model and restore crowns on the implants in the patient’s mouth.
