Since we began pre-screening we have had a number of patients that were diagnosed with ostructive sleep apena. They were unaware of this and now have a chance to add years to their lives.
Some of you may be wondering why a dental office is screening for sleep apnea. We have found that many dentally related issues can be linked to sleep apnea. There is also research that indicates a correlation between sleep apnea and heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, storke, weight gain and other conditions.
We have become members of The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) because we understand how important your sleep is to your dental and medical health.
AADSM is an association of dentists who help patients control obstructive sleep apnea and snoring through the use of oral appliance therapy (OAT). Oral appliance therapy (OAT) is a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and an effective alternative treatment to CPAP. Administered by a dentist, oral appliance therapy uses a custom-fit “mouth guard-like” device worn only during sleep to maintain an open, unobstructed airway.
